The acclaimed Boston based New England Gospel Ensemble (NEGE) was originally formed by some students at the New England Conservatory of Music who were looking for a way to merge their musical talents with their own gospel roots, and spread this joyful sound with their community. The result was the New England Conservatory Gospel Ensemble (later dropping the word, “conservatory”). NEGE has continued to spread their gospel message through song for thirty years and has sung throughout New England.
Renese King, Director of the New England Gospel Ensemble, is a staff member of the Berklee College of Music, Boston, and is a talented instrumentalist and arranger whose soulful and moving voice has been called “resplendent” by The Boston Globe and garnered her a Boston Music Award for Gospel Artist of the Year. Renese King has toured with the Boston Pops, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, and many other orchestras, and was a featured artist on the soundtrack to the Emmy award-winning film Freedom Riders, which was produced for National Public Television’s American Experience. (Berklee Podcast 2012).
Mark Copeland, pianist, graduated from Baltimore School of the Arts high school, and went on to attend Berklee College of Music, in Boston, Massachusetts, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Contemporary Writing and Production. Mark has played for a variety of the most prominent artists such as Patti Labelle, Yolanda Adams, Kim Burrell, Brian McKnight, Carl Thomas and many others. Mark is currently a professor of music at Berklee College of Music, sharing and giving his knowledge to students who share the same passion, while still writing, coaching, and traveling the world playing the piano.
